The True Post (Web News)After a closely contested Calgary municipal election, Communities First Party candidate Sonya Sharp has officially requested a vote recount for the mayoral race.
Sharp lost to independent candidate Jeromy Farkas by just 585 votes in Monday’s election. In a statement released Tuesday, she confirmed that a formal request would be submitted to the city’s Chief Returning Officer for a full review of the results.
“Thank you to every Calgarian who took the time to vote — no matter who you voted for, your participation is the foundation of our democracy,” Sharp said in her statement.
According to Elections Calgary, a recount can be requested if the difference between the top two candidates is less than 0.5% of total votes cast at any polling station. Sharp noted that the 585-vote margin represents only 0.16% of the total.
Unofficial results show Farkas leading with 91,065 votes, followed by Sharp with 90,480, while incumbent Jyoti Gondek finished third with 71,397 votes, conceding defeat Monday night.
Sharp praised voters for braving long lines and cold weather, calling their participation “the true spirit of civic engagement.”
She emphasized that her recount request was not a challenge to election officials but a step toward transparency and fairness.
“I’m prepared to accept the results — win or lose — because, in the end, the voice of Calgarians matters most in local government,” Sharp said, adding that she will refrain from further media comments until the recount process is complete.
The Chief Returning Officer has not yet issued a public response to the request.
