The True Post (Web News) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that his government hopes that Canada will get a better deal on tariffs in ongoing trade negotiations with the United States.
Prime Minister Carney made the remarks while speaking to reporters after meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington. He said, “Canadian and US officials are currently discussing various aspects of the tariff agreement, and we are confident that we will get a good deal.” Asked by the opposition in parliament about the outcome of the meeting, Carney said, “The US has already given Canada the best concession.” According to him, despite the Trump administration’s trade restrictions, many Canadian products are still being sold in the US tariff-free.
He added that the current focus of the negotiations is on steel, aluminum and energy sectors, but progress is expected soon on issues related to the automotive and forestry industries. According to sources, Carney returned home without any formal agreement after meeting with Trump, while Canadian Trade Minister Dominique LeBlanc is in Washington for further discussions on a possible agreement.
Carney described the meeting with Trump as “positive and promising” and said that “these talks have entered a phase where both countries are serious about building their economic relationship on new foundations.” It should be noted that for some time now, tensions have been ongoing between the United States and Canada over tariffs and trade policies, which have had an impact on the economies of both countries. However, the latest talks are being described as an important step towards improving relations.
