Most Calgarians and Edmontonians unhappy with Alberta’s rapid population growth

The True Post (Web News)Alberta’s population is growing rapidly, but most residents of Calgary and Edmonton are unhappy with the pace of that growth.

A recent survey by Janet Brown Opinion Research found that 64% of Calgarians and 62% of Edmontonians believe their cities are expanding too fast, with many saying it’s negatively affecting their daily lives.

According to Statistics Canada, Alberta’s population surpassed five million as of July 2025 and is expected to grow by another two million over the next 25 years.

Respondents cited issues like healthcare wait times, housing shortages, and overcrowded public spaces as major concerns. The study found that people aged 25 to 45, especially those facing financial strain, were most worried about the effects of rising population.

Political analysts say population growth will be a key issue in upcoming municipal elections, as candidates focus on how to manage rapid urban expansion and its impact on city life.
