According to British media, a limited number of troops, including a senior British military commander, have been sent to Israel. This move was made at the request of the US government to directly monitor the progress and implementation of the peace plan in the region.
British Defense Secretary John Healey confirmed the decision during a speech to business leaders in London. He said that British forces can play a key role in establishing long-term peace in the Middle East due to their special skills and experience. According to John Healey, a senior British officer has been appointed as the deputy commander of the US commander who will take charge of a civil-military coordination center. This center will consist of military representatives from Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates and will oversee humanitarian aid, reconstruction and security measures in Gaza.
The development comes just a week after Britain’s new Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, said the government had no plans to send troops to Israel. However, London has changed its position in light of the latest US request and the fragile situation in the region. According to the British government, the deployment is for a limited period and is aimed at bringing stability to the region and ensuring the effective implementation of the Gaza peace plan.
