40 Migrants Dead After Boat Capsizes off Tunisia Coast

According to international news agencies, Tunisian authorities reported that the vessel sank near the coastal city of Mahdia. The boat was carrying around 70 people when it encountered trouble at sea.

Rescue teams managed to save 30 individuals, while 40 bodies were recovered from the water. Search operations are still underway as authorities fear more people may be missing.

Officials stated that the migrants on board were from various African nations, many of whom were attempting to cross the Mediterranean in hopes of reaching Europe for better opportunities. A Tunisian police officer described the tragedy as one of the deadliest maritime disasters to hit the region this year.

The Mediterranean Sea continues to be one of the world’s most perilous migration routes, with hundreds of people losing their lives each year while attempting the dangerous journey from North Africa to Europe.
