Government Wants to Establish Federal Constitutional Court by Tomorrow, 27th Amendment Likely to be Passed Today

Islamabad: Sources have told that the government wants to establish the Federal Constitutional Court immediately after the approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment and its signature by the President.

According to sources, the amendment will resume in the National Assembly today, in which the government is determined to get the amendment approved by the House by the evening.

A senior official said that as soon as the amendment is passed by the National Assembly, the bill will be sent to the President for signature and after that the amendment will officially become part of the Constitution.

As soon as the constitutional process is completed, the government intends to hold the oath-taking ceremony of the judges of the Federal Constitutional Court on Thursday itself, which will formally establish a new court.

Sources have revealed that the government has completed the basic work regarding the appointment of the Chief Justice and other judges of this new court. The initial number of judges in the court will be determined by a presidential order, while future increases in the number of judges will be decided by an Act of Parliament.

Under the 27th Constitutional Amendment, President will appoint judges of the Federal Constitutional Court on the advice of the Prime Minister. The Senate of Pakistan passed the 27th Constitutional Amendment on Monday, while its approval by the National Assembly today will pave the way for its immediate implementation and the Federal Constitutional Court will be formally established by Thursday.
